Is officially the beginning of spring  and today was a lovely sunny day if a little cold.

Everywhere on the farm there are signs of new life .

To Daffodils

Imbolc has been celebrated since ancient times, it’s a Cross Quarter Day, midpoint between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox, this year it falls on the February 4th. The ancient Celts celebrated The Goddess Brigid at Imbolc which in Christian times became St. Brigid’s Day. At the Mound of the Hostages on the Hill of Tara the rising sun at Imbolc and Samhain illuminates the chamber. With the conservation works at the Mound of the Hostages I don’t think it will be possible to get near the entrance this Imbolc.

just down the road from Lough Owel Lodge at cullion Mullingar there is an ancient spring , traditionally associated with Saint Brigid. A path of stones representing the Stations of the Cross leads to a small stone beehive chapel.The water has healing power and many people visit the area.

On a wet and windy day  tucked under a bush were twin lambs .

They had just arrived and were busy trying to stand and  help themselves to breakfast from their mother.

The weather was very cold and so it was decided to  bring them into the farmyard for a few days until they were stronger.

Our lambing season starts in March so we are hoping for no more surprises this side of Christmas.

 Only five days to Christmas Day now .Soon it will be all over and we will be wondering what all the fuss was about.

St. Stephen’s Day is often a much nicer day and everybody is relaxed. No cooking, no fuss and all day to do nothing.

Holly Bush

Hooly in bloom   A pet day.

The lovely colours of autumn on the avenue are there to enjoy. However it does

signal the winter ahead and the clean up that is needed.

 

 

 

Now is a good chance to cut some holly and put it in a bucket of water and it should last until the Christmas decorations are ready

At the 5000 year old  Loughcrew megalithic cairn T in Ireland, the rising sun on the mornings around the equinox illuminates the passage and chamber.Lough crew is about 15 km from our farmhouse bed and breakfast .Many guests visit this great site when going to Fore Abbey.

July is a time of flowers and sun shine

but already the longest day has passed

and the evenings are getting shorter.

The hay has soon to be made being an organic

farm means that we must let nature take

its course.

Winter in Cullion – December 2010

It may have looked nice but it was hard work on the farm keeping the animals fed and watered. The short days meant that every minute was valuable.

Thankfully spring was not far behind and soon the signs of growth were to be seen and enjoyed.

The first snow drops lift the heart.

Lambs Arrive

Young Lamps at playSpring is a lovely time on the farm and the sight of new life is always a joy. The lambs arrived this year without much fuss and there were a lot of twins born.

Then come the Calves

Calves arriveNo sooner are the lambs settled in when the calves start to arrive. This is a very busy time for Martin and many a sleepless night until all are delivered safely

Spring Cleaning

Spring Cleaning at Lough Owel lodgeApril is a time for spring cleaning and getting the house ready to receive our guests for the coming season.

Along with the flowers weeds raise their ugly head and many  hours spent in the garden to try and keep ahead of them.

May arrives blowing gales and causing havoc to the shrubs and some trees.
